Aims
Advanced English, a compulsory course for English majors at tertiary stage, is aimed at training students’ comprehensive language skills, especially listening, speaking, reading, translating and writing. While paying great attention to basic language knowledge, the course focuses on upgrading students’ integrated language proficiency through constant and challenging exercises including listening, speaking, vocabulary accumulation, reading comprehension, text analysis, translating, and writing.
Learning Outcomes
1.Reading at normal speed
a)Grasp the main idea of the passage;
b)Able to complete comprehension exercises;
c)Vocabulary, collocation and word formation.
2.Developing the ability of oral output
a) Able to express theoretically, logically, clearly and correctly;
b)Develop speech and interpretation skills.
3.Identifying general and specific ideas while listening
a)Note-taking and blank-filling;
b)Questions and answers.
4.Translation from English to Chinese or from Chinese to English
a)Grasp basic translating skills;
b)Translation exercises and discourse analysis.
5.Writing for a specific purpose
a)Improved writing skills;
b)Able to write correctly in grammar, fluently in style and elegantly in wording.
Teaching and Learning
Lectures and presentations by the lecturer will be integrated with the student-centered activities in class. The major classroom activities include discussion, presentation and speech. The homework mainly includes language drills, writing, translation, etc.
