Aims

This course responding to understand the content of English conversations, passages, news broadcasts and dictations, which include: understanding and selecting the major information from the materials; being able to retell or give a report based on the notes they have taken down; Skills and strategies applying to English listening; Students in this course will also be aware of the elements that influence English listening comprehension and learn to use those strategies and skills to cope with the difficulties in their listening practice and tests.

Learning Outcomes

1.Listening to Conversations

a)Grasping the main idea of the conversations and taking down some notes, i.e., selecting the major information from the conversations;

b)Finishing the multiple choices and the true or false questions after the first listening;

c)Completing the blank-filling after the second listening.

2.Listening to Passages

a)Grasping the main idea of the passages and taking down some notes, i.e., selecting the major information from the passages;

b)Finishing the multiple choices and the true or false questions after the first listening;

c)Completing the blank-filling after the second listening;

d)Giving brief answers to the questions after the third listening.

3.Listening to News Broadcasts

a)Taking down some notes, i.e., grasping the news leads of the news items;

b)Finishing the multiple choices and the true or false questions after the first listening;

c)Completing the blank-filling after the second or the third listening.

4.Listening to Dictations

a)Grasping the main idea of the passages and taking down some key words and useful expressions after the first reading;

b)Writing down the whole passages after the second and third readings;

c)Checking their work during the final reading;

d)Checking the grammatical and spelling mistakes in their work during the two minutes given after the final reading.

5.Listening Strategies and Skills

a)Note-taking;

b)Predicting;

c)Rephrasing;

d)Recognizing the main ideas;

e)Outlining;

Teaching and Learning

Lectures and presentations by the lecturer will be integrated with student-centered in-class activities including tasks and exercises, independent, group and pair work. A number of group discussions will be held on the topics introduced in class.
