The final qualification competition in Fujian Province for the Fifth National Interpreting Contest kicked off in Xiamen University of Technology on April 16. It was sponsored by Fujian Branch of Language Service Competence Assessment and Training (LSCAT) of Translators Association of China and hosted by Xiamen Master Translation Service Co., Ltd and Xiamen University of Technology.
The contest consisted of two sections of consecutive interpreting from English to Chinese and from Chinese to English, and the elimination system was adopted. The scoring ratio was 50% for information retrieval, 30% for technique use and 20% for professional quality respectively. About 60 contestants from 12 universities in Fujian rivaled in the contest. Some were already postgraduates majoring in interpreting from top-notch universities like Xiamen University, Fujian Normal University and Fuzhou University and they had much more experiences.
The Foreign Language Department of Ningde Normal University sent four green hands to the fierce competition. They were Ding Xuan, Wu Jipeng, Jiang Xinmei, and Ding Ni. It was clear before the contest that there was a slim chance for them to shine in the competition, yet they were encouraged to go ahead bravely and bear in mind that participation matters more. Therefore at the competition they tried their best to display their capacity, managed fairly well and received excellent awards.
It not only created a stage for the students to show themselves, but also practiced their courage and confidence, and gained a deeper understanding of their own oral expression and interpreting level. It also brought new inspiration for the teachers. After the contest, they all felt that they learned a lot and gained much experience which would help them go further in future. And that was a greater goal and success for them and the department.
